Sunset

I had a lovely evening walk with my son to Carhead Rocks below Stanage Edge. It's been a while since we last watched a sunset together, and, oh, all kids need that one-to-one time.

Castleton

Peakshole Water, Castleton, Deryshire

This is by far my favourite bit of Castleton. Peakshole Water flows out of the Peak Cavern, 100 meters upstream, where rope makers used the enormous cave entrance as a natural factory building.

Eyam

The purpose of this trip was to visit Waterfall Swallet near Eyam, but this was more of a reccy this time. The weather was fantastic, as far as strolling was concerned, blue skies, crisp air, more of a October sunny day. Anyway, such light with stark shadows does not lend itself to photographing deep holes in the ground, and that is basically what Waterfall Swallet is. I'm sure it will make its way here. As for now some dark shadows creeping over Eyam stone houses.

Clouds roll in

Yesterday we went outdoors with the intention to climb either Mam Tor ridge or the Rushup Edge. Rushup looked less crowded so that's where we headed. And then the clouds from west started rolling in. It was magical. All vale of Edale stayed clear of clouds but they were gradually building up on the southern side of the edge.

Dividing the land

Shatton Moor, Derbyshire, UK
Thin layer of snow allows the centuries long signs of land use to stand out against the white backdrop. As if one could click a box and all other layers in the map were turned off.

Stanage Edge

We were blessed with snow for the last few days of 2014 here! So I begin 2015 with a picture from 2014 and a post No 401.

November at Longshaw Estate, Peak District

Longshaw Estate lake, Peak District, Derbyshire, UK
A couple of months ago I was showing posts from this blog to our friends Isabel and Dean. Their remark was an eye-opener for me - that most of the images are from winter time. It is true. I love an element of in-obviousness in photography, Autumn and winter aura lends itself very nicely here.
An interesting landscape feature can be seen in the photograph below. A sunken wall, delineating pastures from lawns in front of a hall, forms a barrier for animals like sheep, yet does not obstruct views to the valley beyond. Clever trick. I assume the modern fence is the blessing of the health and safety regulations.

Malinka

This portrait was made by the end of a day, just before sunset at a playground at Chatsworth House Farm. Of course it's not possible to have a sensible look just by telling them to stop and pose - just the opposite would happen. Here Malinka is eating an ice cream and I fired in bursts to get that right moment. Also I shifted around to get the dark background for the highlighted profile which otherwise would get lost against the bright sky.

Going on a tram to school was my daily routine but for mine an my brother's kids an opportunity to go on a tram is a very exotic event and great fun. So when my brother and his family visited us last week, we couldn't possibly miss a visit to the National Tramway Museum in Crich, which is about an hour's drive from Sheffield (and what a nice drive it is, through Peak NP!).
As part of the half term activities in the museum, there were illuminated rides well outside the usual opening hours. What a nice photo opportunity, isn't it?

Chatsworth in Pink

Lately I have been involved with the photographic documentation of Derbyshire's  longest artwork - the Derwent Pulse (derwentpulse.org). Last night the passage took us to illuminated Chatsworth House. The first image was taken before the 'light flow' started. This was the exposure for the background. The finished image below is a composite of about 50 frames, recording the parade on the shores of the river Derwent and the floating spheres.
